The Children's Digital Library

For children, learning to read opens up worlds of adventure and fun, limited only by their imagination. For me, going to the library as a child meant a long ride on my bike. But worlds of adventure that I found there are still with me today. With the Internet, it is possible to read a book simply by clicking a mouse. Today's Family First Site is an example of just such a site.

Called StoryPlace: The Children's Digital Library, this site is an online library of books and activities for preschool and elementary children. There are online stories (such as Firefighters), online activities (such as WShould Fran Wear), and a take home activity (currently a dot-to-dot of Dottie the Dalmatian). There are several subject areas, each with a different theme, such as Dinos Rock, Little Red High Tops, The Golden Ball, and The Three Country Critters. The site is available in both english and spanish.

This is an interesting site for young visitors to spend some quality educational and recreational time. Feel free to let them roam the shelves of this library, it will be time well spent.

Instructions
Click on a pastry to pick it up. Then click and hold down the mouse button to fill it with jelly! Release the button when you're done. It has to be full enough to make the grade! But don't overfill it, or Michelle is in for a messy surprise.

>ART PAD

Release your inner Picasso with the drawing tools available on this site. You'll be able to customize the color, size, and opacity of the brush that you're using. If this alone becomes boring, feel free to sling some paint onto the canvas with the bucket, or type in some random and poignant statements with the text tool. If you make an addition that you don't like, just undo it. The coolest thing about artPad is that it remembers what you've done from the beginning, and you can replay the creative process at any time. The capability to save your work and send it to friends allows them to not only see what you've created, but how you created it. This is the new form of refrigerator art.

Poetry4Kids

Poetry, when I was growing up, was a bother. It was tough enough learning to read, but having to read something that rhymed? What a pain. But as I grew older, I learned to appreciate that sort of literature, mostly thanks to a guy named Shakespeare. Today's Family First Site is for kids that haven't discovered the rthym in rhyming yet, but would like to. It's not as bad as it seems.

It is called Poetry4Kids, and is a pleasant collection of poems on a variety of subjects. Created by Kenn Nesbitt, there are funny poems, a rhyming dictionary, poetry games, and even lessons about how you can write your own poems. The author has used internet technology to stream MP3 audio recordings of his own poems. There are links to other kids-related poem sites, and a monthly poetry writing contest. There is a forum section, so you can share information and ideas with other authors or would-be authors.

This is a cute site, with a lot of potential for entertainment value. Take a trip here, and enjoy the poems. Remember, William Shakespeare had to get his start somewhere
