The Children's Digital Library

For children, learning to read opens up worlds of adventure and fun, limited only by their imagination. For me, going to the library as a child meant a long ride on my bike. But worlds of adventure that I found there are still with me today. With the Internet, it is possible to read a book simply by clicking a mouse. Today's Family First Site is an example of just such a site.

Called StoryPlace: The Children's Digital Library, this site is an online library of books and activities for preschool and elementary children. There are online stories (such as Firefighters), online activities (such as WShould Fran Wear), and a take home activity (currently a dot-to-dot of Dottie the Dalmatian). There are several subject areas, each with a different theme, such as Dinos Rock, Little Red High Tops, The Golden Ball, and The Three Country Critters. The site is available in both english and spanish.

This is an interesting site for young visitors to spend some quality educational and recreational time. Feel free to let them roam the shelves of this library, it will be time well spent.

A helpful kid is a happy kid! Michelle is helping Grandmum make pastries by filling them with ooey, gooey grape jelly. See how many you can fill up!

Instructions
Click on a pastry to pick it up. Then click and hold down the mouse button to fill it with jelly! Release the button when you're done. It has to be full enough to make the grade! But don't overfill it, or Michelle is in for a messy surprise.

>ART PAD

Release your inner Picasso with the drawing tools available on this site. You'll be able to customize the color, size, and opacity of the brush that you're using. If this alone becomes boring, feel free to sling some paint onto the canvas with the bucket, or type in some random and poignant statements with the text tool. If you make an addition that you don't like, just undo it. The coolest thing about artPad is that it remembers what you've done from the beginning, and you can replay the creative process at any time. The capability to save your work and send it to friends allows them to not only see what you've created, but how you created it. This is the new form of refrigerator art.

Poetry4Kids

Poetry, when I was growing up, was a bother. It was tough enough learning to read, but having to read something that rhymed? What a pain. But as I grew older, I learned to appreciate that sort of literature, mostly thanks to a guy named Shakespeare. Today's Family First Site is for kids that haven't discovered the rthym in rhyming yet, but would like to. It's not as bad as it seems.

It is called Poetry4Kids, and is a pleasant collection of poems on a variety of subjects. Created by Kenn Nesbitt, there are funny poems, a rhyming dictionary, poetry games, and even lessons about how you can write your own poems. The author has used internet technology to stream MP3 audio recordings of his own poems. There are links to other kids-related poem sites, and a monthly poetry writing contest. There is a forum section, so you can share information and ideas with other authors or would-be authors.

This is a cute site, with a lot of potential for entertainment value. Take a trip here, and enjoy the poems. Remember, William Shakespeare had to get his start somewhere

Howdy Doody Time

The sophistication of children's shows today is mind-boggling. The topics and subject matter are way beyond what the adults of today dealt with in their youth, topics that were best left to their parents. Today's Family First Site looks at a site that celebrates one of the best (and earliest) kids' television shows. It is one that makes you wish for the days of yesteryear.

The site is called The Howdy Doody Show, and is about wooden puppet named Howdy. There are his friends Buffalo Bob, Princess Summerfall Winterspring, Dilly Dally, and the list goes on. Here you can learn about all aspects of the show, such as the characters, the cast members, a brief history of the show, pictures of the Peanut Gallery, and how you can help Howdy run for President. There is an online store for souvenirs, and a chance to join the new Peanut Gallery fan club.

All told, this site is a great look back into a simpler time, when kids could be kids, and the world really was a kinder, gentler place. In Doodyville, it still is

The little crocodile that ate Germany

With thanks to TREPPWITZ (and others) for all the info

The hottest thing in German music right now is a little ditty sung by a 6-year-old girl about a crocodile.

Joy Gruttman's "Schnappi, Das Kleine Krokodil" (Snappy, the Little Crocodile) is the No. 1 song on the German charts. Her family posted the song on a Web site as a joke. But a radio station in Cologne, Germany, got hold of it and made it a hit.

Gruttman is the youngest recording artist ever to make it into the German Top 10, let alone No. 1. Her hilarious composition is beating out Kylie Minogue and Linkin Park, and is even appearing as remixes in dance clubs. English translation below / Play the music video (click the words "Das Schnappi-Video")

UPDATE: Here is a little more information as well as a servicable translation

1. The little girl was 6 when she recorded the song, not 4.

2. She didn't write it, her aunt (who is a professional children's song writer) wrote the words and composed the tune.

And now, here is the translation:

I am Schnappi, the little crocodile,
I live in Egypt, right next to the Nile,
first I lived in an egg,
but then shnapped my way free

chorus
Schni-schna-schnappi schnappi-schnappi-schnapp
.....

I am Schnappi the little crocodile
have sharp teeth and mighty many of them
I shnap what's there to shnap
I shnap and am good at it

chorus
Schni-schna-schnappi schnappi-schnappi-schnapp
.....

I am Schnappi the little crocodile
I love to shnap, that's my favourite play
I sneak up to mum
and show her how well I shnap

chorus
Schni-schna-schnappi schnappi-schnappi-schnapp
.....

I am Schnappi the little crocodile
I'm never tired of shnapping
I shnap daddy's leg
and then just fall asleep

chorus
Schni-schna-schnappi schnappi-schnappi-schnapp

Further update
Fact is, this song has made it through the internet before it was discovered by the big media. The aunt of this girl [she is actually 9 and recorded the song when she was 6] actually writes childrens songs for one of Germany's best childrens tv show [Sendung mit der Maus], educationalwise. I don't say that this excuses a zillion Germans for making a childrens song not only #1 in the single charts for over a month now but also the hottes cell phone ring tone ever.
